The ‘CSR Europe’ hosted a major Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility on March 3rd and 4th. The event brought together more than 400 company executives from all over Europe. Representing Greece were executives from the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Titan Cement Company, S&B Industrial Minerals S.A., Vodafone, Intracom SA, Bank of Cyprus, the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE), EFG Eurobank Ergasias and Dimiourgiki as well as the President of the Hellenic Network for Corporate Social Responsibility, Mr. N. Analitis.

On the first day, participants had the opportunity to share 108 practical ‘solutions’ on how to integrate CSR into daily business practice. The Titan Cement Company, S&B Industrial Minerals S.A.*, Vodafone, Bank of Cyprus and Intracom SA submitted their CSR practical solutions representing Greece. The solutions of the first three companies were presented in special stands. To view the submitted solutions please visit www.csreurope.org/marketplace.

On the second day, top business leaders and representatives of the EU 25 member states, supported by the European Commission President, Josι Manuel Barroso , launched for the first time in Europe a ‘European Roadmap for Businesses: For a Sustainable and Competitive Enterprise’ – a framework from the business community on how to improve companies’ economic, social and environmental performance.

On this occasion, Commission Vice-President Gónter Verheugen said: “Voluntary business initiatives in the form of corporate social responsibility practices can play an important role in contributing to sustainable development, while enhancing Europe’s innovative potential and competitiveness.”

Commissioner Vladimir Spidla remarked: “Europe is at the forefront of Corporate Social Responsibility. I welcome and support the commitments taken today by European businesses with CSR Europe’s Roadmap. The Commission will therefore continue to promote CSR.”

The conference was an opportunity for the participants to share constructive ideas, given the Commission Communication on CSR, which is expected to be announced shortly.

* During the Conference, S&B presented the two central axes of the Company’s contribution to the cultural infrastructure and tourist development on the island of Milos, where S&B operates: the construction and operation of the Milos Mining Museum and the Milos Conference Center – ‘George Eliopoulos’, since 1998 and 2000 respectively. The Museum has become one of the most popular tourist attractions of the island, displaying the island’s rich mining history and mineral wealth and hosting exhibitions, while, at the same time, organizing at its premises educational programs for the pupils and students of the island. The Conference Center has become an important cultural, social and entertainment center on Milos and, through the organization of scientific conferences, a pole of attraction for high-level conference tourism.
