    Horizontal Directional Drilling

    HDD

    Bentonite-based HDD Fluids, offered by Imerys, perform a number of essential functions during No-Dig horizontal directional drilling projects. These functions include loosening the soil material in front of the drilling head, cooling and lubricating the drill bit and stem, stabilizing the soil around the borehole and facilitating removal of material.

    First developed in the U.S. as an oil-drilling technology, No-Dig methods like horizontal directional drilling have since evolved for use in a range of civil engineering applications including the underground installation of pipes, conduits and cables. Generally, the technique involves using a surface-launched drilling rig and steerable drill head to excavate underground with minimal impact on the surrounding area. Compared to conventional pipe laying methods, No-Dig procedures cause only punctual damage of the surface and require minimal subsequent repairs. In addition, these operations don’t have any impact in the groundwater level, buildings, or plants and minimizes excavation volumes, construction noise and dirt.
