The minerals perlite and bentonite are extracted from major deposits worldwide and hold leading positions in their sectors. Research and Innovation clusters announced by the European Union are targeting at a strategy to create an innovation-friendly environment that makes it easier for great ideas to be turned into products and services that will bring EU’s economy growth and jobs. Active contribution to European Research and Development (R&D) programs is one way of supporting a collaborative way of interaction for generating new ideas. Through participation in announced R&D programs of the European Union, Imerys has been taking the initiative, either as initiator and coordinator or as active participant, to contribute with his know-how and available resources for developing sustainable new ideas. Some examples are given below:
EXPERL Project, 2009-2013:
The project “ExPerl” was aiming at the efficient exploitation of EU perlite resources for the development of a new generation of innovative and high added value micro-perlite based materials for the Construction, Chemical and Manufacturing industry. 10 EU-based companies collaborated on defining characteristics and specifications of new solutions required in building and construction applications. By optimizing raw materials and inventing feasible processing routes, innovative recipes and products have been developed. Their properties as well as suitability were tested and approved by the project partners, paving the way for a new generation of perlite-based products.
LEEMA project, 2012-2016:
The LEEMA consortium comprises 14 partners, from which 6 are large industries and the rest SMEs, universities, research institutes and one consulting organization. The objective of the project is the development of a new generation of inorganic insulation materials and building insulation masonry components based on the inorganic polymerization of mineral tailings and novel low energy processing methods. New formulations and products will be named as “3I” materials, referring to the 3 key characteristics: Inorganic, Insulating and Incombustible.
The assessment of the environmental sustainability of each one of the new insulation components will be performed with life cycle assessment studies. In this European Program Imerys has the project management.
SUSCON project, 2012-2016:
The SUSCON consortium comprises of 16 partners, from which 7 are large and medium sized industries and 9 institutes and certification entities. The project aims at developing completely new concepts and technology routes to integrate waste materials in the production of concrete, for both ready-mixed and pre-cast applications, resulting in innovative, eco-compatible and cost-effective construction materials, characterized by lightweightness, low embodied energy, low CO2 footprint and improved thermal and acoustic insulation performances.
